How to Make Chickpeas Burger Patty
When I first made these burgers, I had fried them in oil.
However, I’ve come to enjoy it better baked in the oven. I’ll share with you the steps to do both!
Steps for Frying Burger:
- Heat oil in a frying pan and sauté onion and garlic for 1 minute. Then, set aside.
- Add chickpeas, cooked onion and garlic, cumin, salt, flour, escallion, thyme leaves, all-purpose seasoning, and jalapeño powder in a food processor or high-power blender until it forms a burger batter dough.
- Sprinkle flour onto a baking tray and your hands. Using a spoon, scoop the batter into 4-5 sections and form a ball from each. If the batter is too sticky, add more flour to better form the ball.
- Using your hands or rolling pin, flatten each ball and shape it into a patty —place it in the fridge for 30 minutes to be firmed.
- Heat oil in a large frying pan, and fry each burger patties for 5-8 minutes or until golden brown on both sides. Turn at 5-minute intervals to prevent burning and help cook evenly.
- Serve on a burger bun and topped with your favorites: lettuce, tomato slices, and sauce of choice.
Notes: For an even crispier patty, bake these after frying them. Bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Place each burger patty on a greased baking tray and place in the oven. Bake for 20 minutes. Flip halfway through baking.
- Remove from oven and serve.
You can even GRILL your burgers as if they were regular beef burgers!

Tips for Making Chickpeas Burger Patty
- If you prefer firmer patties, you can bake them in the oven after frying. Bake for 20-30 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius.
- Adding carrots, sweetcorn, and other ingredients can give your burgers more color and flavor to shake things up.
- You can find steps to cooking dried chickpeas for this recipe here or use canned chickpeas.
- Prep time doesn’t include time spent cooking dried chickpeas. I usually use Goya dried chickpeas that I pressure cook to soften them ahead of time and store them for future use.
Storing and Re-heating Tips
Store uncooked patties in foil or parchment paper separately in the freezer for easy storage and meal planning. Perfect for a quick-in-the-week lunch or dinner.
Keep leftover burgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.
Reheat each patty in the oven for 5-10 minutes or 1-2 minutes – in the microwave.
