Pineapple Skin Tea
Pineapple Skin Tea is one of the easiest anti-inflammatories to make. Perfect to help build your immune system most healthily. Enjoy it as a hot or iced tea!
If you love pineapple like my husband and I, then you know you’re always left with a pile of pineapple skin after peeling.
Well, that’s if you purchase whole pineapples instead of peeled ones.
Did you?
Anyway, the point is, don’t throw out those pineapple peels just yet because today, you’re going to turn those peels into a healthy drink that many of us can enjoy.
Since moving to the Cayman Islands, I’ve been trying to find many healthy ways to enjoy the paradise life I live.
That includes exercising as often as possible and finding healthier eating methods.
Whenever we go grocery shopping, we look for deals to help us stay within our budget.
And the last few times pineapples were on special, I went ahead and saved the skins just for this recipe.
So, let’s see how you can enjoy a delicious drink such as Pineapple Skin Tea.
What are Pineapples?
Pineapple is a tropical plant that bears the sweet edible fruit we love called pineapples, indigenous to South America.
This edible fruit is used in many tasty cuisines and can also make a refreshing drink on a hot summer day.
The raw pulp contains 86% water, while the rest is carbohydrates and protein.
Present in a majority of the pineapple plant is an enzyme called bromelain.
This enzyme is said to have many health benefits for the human body, which include being an anti-inflammatory.
Ingredients To Use
This recipe is super easy to make and requires no extra anything you wouldn’t have in your kitchen.
- Pineapple peels: you can use fresh peels or peels you stored in your freezer for this recipe.
- Ginger: to add flavor to your tea
- Turmeric powder/root: I used the powder, but feel free to add the root. When adding grated turmeric root, remember to strain your tea to remove it.
- Water
To boost your drink, you can also try these other ingredients:
- Aromatics: lemongrass, garlic, cinnamon sticks/powder, cloves, orange/lemon peel
- Herbs/Spices: some may add thyme, black pepper, cayenne pepper, mint, basil, sage, etc.
How To Make Pineapple Skin Tea
All you need to get started with this recipe is a big pot, and you’re ready to roll.
Steps:
- If you’re using a whole pineapple, thoroughly scrub and wash your pineapple. I had some pineapple skin in my freezer that I will be using.
- Fill a large pot with water, pineapple peels, ginger, and turmeric, and bring to a boil.
- Allow pineapple peel to boil for 5-10 minutes or longer for a more concentrated brew.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
- Serve hot or cold. Sweeten with sugar or honey.
One of my favorite things about brewing this tea is the fragrance released is so sweet and heavenly from the pineapples.
Serving Suggestions
Enjoy your brew as a hot cup of tea, or you can serve it chilled on ice like iced tea!
Be sure to sweeten with sugar or honey.
For a vegan option, you can use maple syrup.
Why You Should Make This Recipe?
Pineapple Skin Tea comes with many health benefits no matter what part of the fruit/plant.
Studies have shown that the enzyme bromelain found in pineapples (even the peels) can help our bodies:
- Filtrations of blood
- Aids in digestion
- Reduce inflammation
- Helps to prevent blood clots
In addition, it also helps to boost energy and is a good source of vitamin C and magnesium, which helps in joint pain relief.
Tips For Making Pineapple Skin Tea
- Feel free to improve your tea with aromatics and herbs such as mint, thyme, cloves, garlic, orange/lemon peels, or lemongrass.
- If you don’t have any turmeric powder, then freshly grated turmeric root can be used. Remember to strain your tea to remove any unwanted particles.
- To reduce the amount in this recipe, cut the ingredients in half. I had a lot of pineapple skin, so I made a huge batch.
Storage Tips
Store your pineapple tea in a glass or plastic bottle in your refrigerator for up to a month.
I used some old wine bottles to store the leftovers since I made such a huge batch.
