Green Bean Casserole
Enjoy this classic Green Bean Casserole for the best holiday dinner. Made with fresh green beans and mushroom soup and topped with fried onions, it’s the perfect side dish that brings everything together.
This holiday season has been more festive than I’ve ever experienced in a while.
We got invited to two Thanksgiving dinners this year, and we almost didn’t make either.
Luckily, with good planning, we got to enjoy both.
For one of the invites, we got asked to select a dish to make and take with us for dinner.
I was very excited to try this out as part of my food blogging journey; I got to showcase my skills and get feedback.
So, when we went through the list, I had selected sweet potato casserole, but D didn’t confirm our selection in time, so we re-selected and made green bean casserole.
I’ve never made this dish before, and I was a bit nervous as it’s not a Jamaican dish – which is what I do here, for the most part.
So, to step out of my comfort zone, I was impressed when I heard how great my casserole came out.
Need another quick holiday side dish? Then, try my easy-to-make Classic Potato Salad.
What is Green Bean Casserole?
This traditional American side dish has been around for quite some time, consisting primarily of green beans, mushroom soup, milk, and fried onions.
The recipe was created in the mid-1950s by a home economist, Dorcas Reilly, at Campbell’s Soup Company.
After many trials, she created the popular holiday favorite Green Bean Casserole, originally called Green Bean Bake.
Over the years, the recipe has evolved slightly with minor upgrades as people would add their twist to this classic dish.
As excited as I was to make this recipe, I wanted to try what variations I would do to make it even better.
Ingredients To Use
In making my green bean casserole, I decided to add other ingredients to see how I could make it more Caribbean or Jamaican.
However, I couldn’t think of anything Caribbean for this recipe, haha!
So, I simply added some chopped sweet peppers, cumin (accidentally), and jalapeno powder.
- Green Beans – fresh green beans are the best choice, but you can always try frozen or canned.
- Almond milk – you can also use coconut or evaporated milk
- Cream of Mushroom Soup
- Yellow Onion
- Minced Garlic
- Red Bell Peppers
- Fried Onion
- All-purpose seasoning
- Scotch Bonnet Pepper for garnish
