What are Fritters?
While growing up as a child, banana fritters were a favorite of mine.
Though we didn’t always have it all, these bad boys were and STILL are my choice of fritters.
Fritters are widely known to be portions of meat, vegetables, fruits, or seafood combined with other ingredients and then deep-fried in hot oil.
They can be sweet or savory and usually easy to prepare, the way I know, at least.
In parts of South Asia, fritters are a popular street food snack commonly referred to as pokora (pokada) or bhajii (bhajia).
In the CARIBBEAN, such as in Jamaica, conch fritters and saltfish (cod) fritters are popular treats for us.
For Africa, specifically South Africa, pumpkin fritters served with cinnamon sugar are very common and served at any time of the day.
The variations are endless. However, I’ll stick to the Caribbean way of making these desserts.
Ingredients To Use
Like many fritters recipes, the batter is made with portions of meat, vegetables, and other ingredients to spice it up.
- Bananas – the best kind are ripe bananas. I like to use ones that are overripe for more sweetness. Not too ripe.
- Sugar – brown sugar works great, but you can use your choice of sugar.
- Flour – all-purpose flour is my choice of flour. To get the best incorporation of ingredients, remember to sift the flour a few times.
- Cinnamon Powder – sweet spice flavor.
- Nutmeg – another great spice to add.
- Vanilla Extract
- Salt
- Oil
